Eight slow days down the south coast — fort cities, stilt fishermen, and a private boat to the blue whales of Mirissa.
The south coast is Sri Lanka in its barefoot register: long, palm-lined beaches, a single highway that hugs the shore, and a series of cliff-top villas designed to make you want to stop walking. This journey moves slowly between three of the finest: Galle Fort, Weligama and Mirissa.
Between beach days you visit a turtle hatchery at dawn, sail out to see blue whales, and walk the Dutch ramparts of Galle Fort at sunset. The pace is gentle, the swimming is excellent, and every dinner is on the sand.
