Summits & Surf

Sri Lanka's interior holds two of the most rewarding mountain experiences in South Asia: the cloud-forest trails of the Knuckles Range, and the pre-dawn pilgrimage to the summit of Adam's Peak. This journey takes you through both with a private mountain guide, in proper boots, with porters where you want them and a Land Rover where you need one.

The route begins in the Knuckles, with two days of guided trekking through cloud forest, monasteries built into the rock, and waterfalls only the locals know. From there, the journey moves higher: a pre-dawn ascent of Adam's Peak — a sacred sunrise that draws Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Muslim pilgrims alike — followed by a slow descent and a hot bath in a heritage bungalow.

The final stretch is the country's least-visited coast: Arugam Bay, on the east, where the surf season runs May to September and the bays are still mostly empty. You stay in a boutique surf villa, take lessons or guided point-break sessions depending on your level, and end each day with sundowners on the sand. A domestic flight returns you to Colombo for the journey home.
