Hill Country Tea Trails

The Sri Lankan highlands sit at 5,000 feet, above the heat and the heavier light of the coast, in a landscape that British planters once compared — accurately — to a softer version of Scotland. Tea estates spill down the hillsides in geometric green terraces, mist rises from the valley floor each morning, and the air smells of eucalyptus and woodsmoke. This is a journey designed to slow you down inside that landscape.

You stay at five-star accommodation, five restored planter's bungalows operated together as a single Relais & Châteaux property and arranged around the Castlereagh Reservoir. Each bungalow has a butler, a fire laid in the lounge by 6pm, and a four-course menu cooked entirely around what was picked that morning. Between bungalows, you walk: planters' paths through working estates, with a picnic lunch set out at a viewpoint.

The journey threads in the country's other slow rituals — a private observation carriage on the Kandy to Ella railway, an afternoon tea-blending session with the estate's resident tea-maker, a candlelit dinner laid out on the lawn of a 1930s bungalow. There is no rush. There is, deliberately, nothing in the schedule that resembles a checklist.
